Urban ecosystems are the cities, towns, and urban settlements built and inhabited by people. The growth of urban populations and the consequent need for built infrastructure has affected both urban areas and their surroundings, including suburban and rural environments. This subject introduces theories and principles related to urban ecosystems, including natural, social, cultural, and economic processes. Topics discussed apply to all urban environments and focus upon biodiversity, ecosystem services, hydrology, landscape architecture, climate, policy, social and human ecology, and urban planning. You will examine urban ecosystems as complex man-made systems where nature - its services, meanings, maintenance, and management - permeates everyday living. As a result, you will be able to develop concepts and plan for resilient urban environments, which respond to current world pressures such as climate change, and are healthier places to live, work and visit.
