What forms of media and texts do people use to write about themselves and their lives? How do we read stories that are based on real events and real people? This subject offers students the opportunity to learn about the practice and theory of one of the key forms of contemporary storytelling: life writing. Students will sample a range of life narrative forms such as memoir, digital life narratives, and personal essays. We will discuss theories of auto/biographical representation; examine the cultural context for the production and circulation of life stories; and develop tools to identify and critique different genres of and approaches to writing lives. Students will also get the opportunity to produce their own piece of life writing in their chosen genre, drawing on relevant theories and techniques.
