EG2010 - Materials Science and Engineering
Credit points: | 03 |
Year: | 2019 |
Student Contribution Band: | Band 2 |

This subject comprises an overview of materials science and engineering, classification, properties and applications of materials. The materials science part is more related with the structure and properties of materials while the materials engineering analyses the impact of these structural properties and processing techniques on the final materials performance. Understanding the interrelationship between processing, structure, properties and performance is the ultimate objective of this subject. Topics covered in this subject are: metals including alloys, ceramics, polymers, composites, atomic structure and bonding, crystal structures, mechanical properties, phase diagrams, electrical and optical properties.
Learning Outcomes
- describe and summarise key properties of metal, ceramic, polymer and composite materials;
- examine phase diagrams and crystal structure of different materials;
- analyse material properties (mechanical, thermal, optical and electrical) and their implications on process selection and final application;
- combine knowledge on materials science and engineering with experimental and analytical skills.
