This subject extends and deepens student knowledge and competencies with core counselling microskills developed in ED5863 Foundations of Counselling Practice. The integration of the microskills hierarchy from different theoretical and multicultural perspectives will be explored and the ethical responsibilities within the counselling profession will be addressed. The core microskills used in interviewing and counselling will be practiced in simulated counselling sessions with students critically reflecting on their development as a counsellor.
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate advanced oral, writing, listening and advocacy skills required of a professional working in the guidance and counselling and career development fields;
- apply proficient diverse integrated counselling theories and communication styles with both specialist and non-specialist stakeholders;
- integrate into practice knowledge of the current legislation and ethical requirements outlined in the Code of Ethics in the Australian Counselling Association and the Singapore Association for Counselling;
- synthesise and articulate critical self-evaluation of students' beliefs, values, prejudices and biases;
- interpret, evaluate and justify different counselling perspectives and theories.
