Note: The workshops for the Cairns offering of this subject are delivered via videoconference from Townsville.
'Subject English' education in the context of Years 7-10 of secondary schooling is the focus of this subject. This subject attends to the construction of pedagogical content knowledge and practice within this context. Students will engage with and demonstrate an understanding of the Australian Curriculum: English. They will also engage with and design discipline-specific curriculum planning, assessment practices and teaching strategies as relevant to the Years 7-10 English classroom context. Students will explore issues that impact on teaching and learning in the context of the Years 7-10 English classroom as well as reflect critically upon and evaluate theoretical positions/frameworks and professional resources. They will explore, for example: theoretical and practice-based issues of literacy and language teaching and learning broadly; pedagogies of reading, writing, speaking/performing, listening and viewing; the field of literary and popular culture studies (including multimodal approaches); and ways of working with student diversity (including linguistic and cultural diversity and learning (dis)ability) as they apply to the Years 7-10 English classroom.
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate professional discipline and pedagogical knowledge as it applies to the teaching and learning of English in the Years 7-10 secondary English classroom;
- demonstrate knowledge of the Australian Curriculum: English and its application to the Years 7-10 secondary English classroom context;
- engage with, reflect critically on and evaluate theoretical debates and professional resources as relevant to the Years 7-10 secondary English classroom;
- demonstrate knowledge of and design discipline- specific curriculum planning, assessment and teaching strategies as appropriate to the context of the Years 7-10 secondary English classroom;
- demonstrate Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at a developed level.
| Assumed Knowledge: | It is assumed that students will have gained a Pass Grade or above in ED1421, and have the capacity to build upon the content matter and its classroom applications as addressed in that subject. It is also assumed that students will have advanced academic literacy capabilities as required for the successful completion of the assessment tasks in this subject. So, too, it is envisaged that you will have the appropriate knowledge and skills to engage critically with set texts and tasks. |
