This subject introduces the land components of the hydrological cycle. Topics covered include: Hydrology design rainfall; peak discharges; design flood hydrographs; estimation of floods; urban stormwater management; groundwater hydrology. River mechanics continuity equation; plug flow; solute transport; secondary flow; scour. Reservoir processes stratification; mixing; inflows and outflows; seasonal cycles; destratification methods. The contaminant transport process, surface water hydrology, and groundwater hydrology will be emphasized in this subject.
Learning Outcomes
- develop an understanding of the processes determining surface and subsurface hydrology, river flows and reservoir and lake dynamics;
- develop methods of finding engineering solutions to problems associated with standing and flowing surface water and subsurface flows;
- develop the ability to work both individually and as part of a team in the analysis and solution of engineering problems pertaining to surface and subsurface flows.
