Important industrial fermentation and microbial processes; biochemical and molecular biological concepts reviewed; enzyme kinetics; microbial growth and fermentation kinetics; batch, fed-batch and continuous culture modelling; aeration and mass transfer; immobilised cell culture; operation, monitoring and control of fermentation systems; downstream processing; bioprocess design and economics.
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate knowledge of fundamental biological concepts and explain the important biological processes occurring in biotechnology and environmental waste-treatment applications;
- recognise and apply fundamental kinetic models to fit experimental biological growth data;
- use design equations and kinetic models to determine important operational characteristics of bio-reactors;
- apply and develop fundamental stoichiometric models to characterise bio-reactions.
