This subject is designed to promote the skills necessary as a research or professional chemist whilst consolidating and enhancing the students' underpinning knowledge base. Students will select an area of topical chemistry research, students will identify, understand and critically analyze the scientific literature of this area. Students will be exposed to the peer-review process, and develop an understanding of the indicators and attributes for quality research publications, relevant to chemistry. Students will develop written and oral skills for effective communication of key concepts, techniques, and research status associated with the selected research topic for a variety of forums.
Learning Outcomes
- identify relevant scientific articles through appropriate use of literature databases and citation indices;
- interpret and critically analyze the scientific literature on the current chemistry research area;
- create a reference inventory on the topic of choice and cite those references of greatest importance;
- construct a scientific report by integrating the literature into a review article;
- appraise the merits of individual references to the literature in the field;
- assemble and present oral research presentation/s suitable for dissemination to a variety of target audiences including graduate chemists, industry, high schools and the broader community.
