This subject will be first offered in 2018 and will be available in Cairns, Townsville and External modes.
This subject explores how governments manage their societies to achieve collective goals. It will investigate key competing theories of governance for understanding modern governance arrangements. It explores the strategies, instruments and relationships that governments use to help govern and resolve societal problems. Topics covered will include: the state, meta-governance (the government of governance), hierarchy, persuasion, markets, community engagement and associations. Students will have the opportunity to investigate and analyse a range of governance issues of relevance to the Asia-Pacific and the tropical world.
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate a critical understanding of key theories of governance;
- identify the multitude of mechanisms, strategies and relationships that states employ to govern societies;
- apply relevant theories and concepts to explain and evaluate modern governance arrangements in real-world contexts.
