To be a veterinarian you require a broad understanding of the natural world. This subject is designed to acquaint it you with the full range of biodiversity, from plants to mammals, and everything in between. We will examine the origins and organisation of all life, and learn the principles that allow you to make sense of the diversity of structure. In lectures, we will expose you to the vital basic knowledge required for understanding scientific principles of plant and animal biology, which is designed as an introduction allowing you to conduct more advanced and specialised studies later. In the laboratories, you will review these principles, and be exposed to examples of biodiversity in all its wonder and complexity. You will learn the basic features of animals and plants. Students enrolling in this subject should have a good understanding of Chemistry, Mathematics and English to Grade 12 (Queensland) or equivalent. Students without chemistry and mathematics must complete CH1020 and MA1020 in first year.
