The aim of this subject is to prepare Indigenous and non-Indigenous students to work respectfully alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by providing students with culturally appropriate skills and theoretical frameworks. Students will be encouraged to develop a critical awareness of the unique, complex, historical and contemporary relationships between social work and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples including social structures, systems, inequities and injustices, and how to apply professional knowledge and skills to address injustices.
Learning Outcomes
- have a critical appreciation of the unique, complex, historical and contemporary relationships between social work and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and the impact of these relationships;
- demonstrate an ability to articulate distinctive Aboriginal and Torres Strait Isalnder approaches to helping;
- demonstrate an ability to work alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and apply professional knowledge and skills to address social barriers and injustice;
- have critical awareness of their own cultural and historical socialisation and how this socialisation may fit with, or be different from, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge and values, and therefore how their socialisation can impact on their professional practice.

Prerequisites: | To undertake this subject, students must have successfully completed 12 credit points (four subjects) of level 1 study at tertiary level OR (admitted to course code 103804 and allow concurrent enrolment in WS5516) |
