Available to graduate students with a degree in Veterinary Science (other appropriately trained graduates may enrol at the discretion of the Director of the Australian Institute of Tropical Veterinary and Animal Science).

This is a student-orientated course that seeks to build on undergraduate knowledge in the fields of veterinary microbiology and immunology. It is structured around six main themes/sessions that deal with: - Host-parasite interactions at a cellular and molecular level; - Tests used to detect infectious agents and the immune response to these agents; - Application of tests in the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases.

Learning Outcomes

• discuss the animals host's immune response to infectious agents and apply this knowledge to predict how to diagnose and correctly select immunoprophylaxis of a particular disease;
• use your knowledge of the key features of immunopathology of important and common diseases across a range of animal species to predict the pathogenesis and pathology of those diseases;
• select the most appropriate procedures for sample collection and sample handling to ensure that laboratory results are optimal analyse and select and interpret the most optimal diagnostic tests, both patient-side and in the laboratory available for important and common diseases in a range of animals;
• map test results with other epidemiological features of a disease in order to predict infectious or parasitic agent spread and origin.
