This subject will introduce participants to the concepts of and tools used in applying One Health to common health issues at the animal, human and ecosystem interface. Building upon the foundations of biological, epidemiological, economical and socio-cultural principles, it introduces participants to systems and transdisciplinary thinking to develop the skills needed to identify, control and manage health problems at the human/animal/ecosystem interface. It emphasizes an evidence based approach to applying one health approach to disease surveillance, policy and programme development, risk and health communications, investment cases, At the end of the subject the participants will be able to apply one health approaches in a range of practical situations; to prioritise and identify gaps in knowledge of infectious and non-infectious diseases in human/animal/ ecosystems at national, regional and global levels; and to communicate, promote and manage intersectoral interventions at community levels. The subject will have some pre-subject activities (readings and/or videos) that will be part of the subject preparation and assessment with a short guided reflective written piece. Participation in the subject will require readings, maintenance of a reflective diary, preparation activities and group work outside the formal face-to-face time and will require work on the final assessment after the subject.

  • 5 hours practicals - Exercises to utilse methods and approaches introduced in course.
  • 3 hours workshops/Seminars - Industry/practitoners for brief presentations/reflections and faciliated Q and A
  • 102 hours - Peer Teaching, Group Work, Preparatory activities, readings etc
    Assessment:presentations (15%); assignments (60%); pre-face to face teaching reading/videos with reflective short answer to questions posed (10%); reflective diary on their changed perspectives to practice given the one health approach, systems thinking and transdisciplinarity (15%).
    Special Assessment Requirements:Hurdle: Peer teaching - given a topic on a particular disease individual participants will prepare a small 3-5 minute presentation to the class at the beginning of the second week of the block.
