This is a core subject for students enrolled in the Master of Social Science and Master of Social Work degree. This subject is aimed at assisting postgraduate students to gain an understanding of an advanced, integrated body of knowledge regarding research in the Social Sciences, including ethics, theories, research principles and methods. Students will have the opportunity to investigate topics, worldviews, methodologies, methods and processes for social science research and demonstrate their proficiency in designing, planning and executing a substantial social science research project. The subject will focus on qualitative methods, with content on quantitative methodologies, mixed method design and discipline specific research designs.
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate and apply an advanced, integrated body of knowledge regarding research in the Social Sciences including ethics, theories, research principles and methodologies;
- design, plan and execute a substantial research project in the Social Sciences;
- have knowledge of qualitiative, quantitative and mixed methodologies;
- summarise and critique a range of social science research in discipline specific articles;
- produce a well-written research proposal demonstrating logical flow and an ethical and respectful approach to research;
- demonstrate a broad knowledge and understanding of issues encountered when researching across diverse contexts;
- demonstrate a broad knowledge and understanding through the literature of recent perspectives of policy makers as linked to undertaking research;
- apply a high level of responsibility and accountability for their own learning and professional development.
