SP2201 - Exercise Prescription
Credit points: | 03 |
Year: | 2018 |
Student Contribution Band: | Band |
Administered by: | Sports & Exercise Science |
This subject will provide the physiological basis, practical skills and scientific knowledge necessary to prescribe exercise. Students will develop knowledge and capacity to design and implement safe yet effective goal-specified exercise programs that are evidenced-based for the low risk healthy population and those with medical conditions, such as diabetes, obesity, asthma and cardiovascular disease. The subject will also cover the planning and logistics of exercise programming with appropriate progression, regression and exercise cessation according to typical risk factors identified during pre-screening.
Learning Outcomes
- describe the relationship between physical activity and health-related physical fitness;
- identify common risk factors for chronic disease development and describe the relationship with lifestyle and physical fitness;
- explain and apply the principles of exercise prescription using scientific evidence that considers various training variables (e.g. training intensity/volume, exercise mode, exercise sequence, recovery);
- formulate individualised exercise programs that considers physiological conditions of low risk healthy individuals and those with medical conditions which meets specified fitness-related goals;
- explain when training progression and regression are appropriate as well as identify signs and symptoms for exercise cessation.
