This subject provides a foundation for over-the-counter prescribing and the provision of unscheduled products, S2 and S3 medications, for patients who present to a pharmacist. This subject will develop the understanding of professional pharmacy practice with an emphasis on the process of over-the-counter prescribing and the management of common presentations that are within the scope of practice of a pharmacist. Students will develop communication skills during interactions with simulated patients. The subject will include discussions about the relevant role of the pharmacist in primary health care along with pharmacy assistants and pharmacy technicians, and will encompass legal, ethical and professional issues. In this subject students will also examine the implication of genetics in pharmacy practice focusing on common genetic disorders, the molecular biology of cancer, and an understanding of inter-patient variation in drug response. The subject PC3102 has a strong practical focus and will enable studetns to manage common, minor, and self-limiting conditions, to refer when necessary, and to have an understanding of the impact of genetic variability on disease and drug response in individuals and populations.
