Available to students enrolled in level 2 of the Bachelor of Pharmacy.
This subject is designed to introduce you to some of the conditions that are associated with the gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary systems. You will learn about the pathophysiology of these conditions and their clinical management. In addition you will be introduced to the principles of nutrition in adults and children. Under certain conditions and during the acute phase of some conditions, patients will require supplementary feeding such as enteral nutrition (EN) or total parenteral nutrition (TPN). Indications and contraindications to EN and TPN, as well as formulation of these products, will be covered in this subject. There is also a strong pharmaceutical component to this subject specifically addressing liquid dosage form design and this is supplemented by a practical in pharmaceutical technology. This subject also seeks to build and develop students written and communication skills.
Learning Outcomes
- to describe the pathophysiology of the gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary system and eating disorders;
- to describe the clinical presentation of a number of conditions affecting the gastrointestinal tract and hepatobiliary system;
- to identify and appraise the clinical management of conditions affecting the gastrointestinal tract and hepatobiliary system and indicate where appropriate use of over the counter and complementary medications as well as any contraindications to their use;
- to describe the principles of nutrition and dietetics and explain the nutritional requirements of adults and children;
- to describe and apply the pharmaceutical principles underlying liquid dosage formulations used by the pharmacist in dispensing.
