This subject will examine the complexity of chronic illness, disability, rehabilitation and palliative care. It will focus on the development of a holistic approach to nursing care to assist the novice nurse to provide safe and compassionate care to those who endure chronic illness and/or disability, and require rehabilitation or palliative care. This subject is offered to the Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery students in their final year of study and includes an 80 hour clinical nursing placement to ensure students have recent nursing practice prior to graduation.
Learning Outcomes
- Discuss nursing strategies used in the management of individuals experiencing a range of chronic health problems and those with terminal illness;
- Apply rehabilitation principles to prevent complications; maintain and restore function for those individuals experiencing chronic health conditions and disabilities;
- Integrate knowledge of the psychopathological and pathophysiological changes occurring in individuals living with a range of chronic health conditions and/or terminal illness;
- Describe and apply supportive responses to individuals and families experiencing chronic health conditions and those living with terminal illness through the provision of increasingly complex therapeutic nursing management;
- Appropriately assess the client with a chronic illness or disability Recognise the need for a seamless transition of care between settings.
