The underpinning philosophy of woman-centered, value based care is foundational to this subject. Students will explore aspects of pregnancy planning, reproduction, conception and fetal development. In particular students will focus on law and ethics as it applies to nursing and midwifery practice, pregnancy, screening and assessment for women and in particular, women located in rural and regional areas of Australia.
Learning Outcomes
- explain the anatomy and physiology of human reproduction;
- describe the role of the midwife in screening and assessment in promoting a healthy pregnancy;
- outline the evidence base for continuity of care in support of a woman centred approach to midwifery care;
- demonstrate knowledge of the main features of the ethical traditions influencing nursing and midwifery;
- demonstrate knowledge of the law as it applies to nursing and midwifery practice in Australia;
- plan and implement strategies for ethical and culturally safe midwifery care including the provision of education and information.

Assessment: | end of semester exam (50%); midwifery clinical competency workbook (%); essays (30%); professional portfolio (%); presentation (20%); recruit and complete 2x cces (%). |
Special Assessment Requirements: | Examinations may be scheduled outside regular university examination period - refer to Clinical calendar. Submit all items of assessment; 100% attendance at Clinical Lab sessions; Midwifery clinical competency workbook is a must pass assessment item; Professional Portfolio - 100% P/F; Achieve a cumulative score of 50% or more for the subject; Continuity of Care Experiences - students recruit two CCE women and commence reflective journals (add to professional portfolio). |
