This subject focuses on the normal physiological processes associated with pregnancy, labour and birth, establishing breastfeeding and care in the early postnatal period. Students will develop decision-making skills essential to woman-centred collaborative midwifery practice for both women and the newborn.
Learning Outcomes
- outline factors that influence midwifery care focusing on normal physiological processes;
- describe the role of the midwife in assessing, planning and evaluating safe and effective care;
- outline the evidence base for continuity of care in supporting a woman centred approach to midwifery care;
- plan and implement strategies for culturally safe midwifery care including the provision of education and information;
- apply the national competency standards for the midwife in supporting woman centred care;
- apply principles of effective breastfeeding while being supportive of a womans choice regarding infant feeding.
