This subject introduces the student to the clinical chemistry laboratory. The student will be led through fundamental issues of spectrophotometric analysis, quality assurance, basic technical skills and laboratory manual preparation. Organ system function will be reviewed with a focus on the methods required for the determination of disorders and the clinical interpretation of results.
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate an integrated theoretical and technical knowledge of basic methods of clinical chemical analysis;
- demonstrate an integrated theoretical and technical knowledge of quality assurance application and interpretation;
- apply recognized methods and tools of clinical biochemistry in a clinical/medical investigative context;
- reflect on current skills, knowledge and attitudes, in order to plan and implement ongoing personal and professional development needs, relevant to clinical biochemistry and working as a professional medical laboratory scientist;
- exercise judgment to interpret and comment on data collected during practical/clinical sessions and the interpretation of clinical case studies.

Assessment: | end of semester exam (50%); practical examination (25%); assignments (25%). |
Special Assessment Requirements: | A pass in both the practical and theoretical components of this subject is required to pass the subject. Also satisfactory completion of assignment and case studies. |
