Broad overview of management with examples set in a contemporary Medical Laboratory Framework. This subject builds on issues introduced in Introduction to Biomedicine (BM1001). Further developing the students understanding of Quality assurance/quality management issues as they relate to: Preanalytical, Analytical and post analytical issues; Human resource and cost management; Professional utilisation and development of workforce; Operational issues: Range of testing equipment available: modes of operation maintenance and servicing. Interfaces to laboratory information systems; Medico legal considerations. The student should leave with a clear understanding of the ISO 15189 guidelines underpinning NATA accreditation of Pathology Laboratories.
Learning Outcomes
- apply and evaluate knowledge and management tools for issues of human and capital resource management for medical laboratories;
- apply and evaluate laboratory theory and tools for management of pre, post and analytical quality assurance;
- explain and apply the principles and hierarchy of the NATA accreditation process for medical testing;
- analyse and report on the appropriates of a number of laboratory management techniques in the context of a working Medical laboratory;
- demonstrate personal and social responsibility and accountability through an awareness of ethical frameworks, by working safely and responsibly in the Medical laboratory Science Environment.
