This subject describes mathematical techniques applied to the formulation and solution of real world problems. Topics will be chosen from: Linear and non-linear difference equations, systems of difference equations, population models and the Fibonacci sequence, the non-linear oscillator, stability analysis, non-linear differential equations, simple harmonic motion, the simple pendulum, linear programming, the paper-production problem, the simplex method, optimality analysis, duality linear programming and sensitivity analysis.
Learning Outcomes
- formulate mathematical models for problems in science and engineering;
- use mathematical techniques to solve these problems;
- deduce certain properties of solutions without obtaining the full solution;
- analyse the suitability of a mathematical model and communicate findings;
- apply the fundamentals of operations research to linear programming problems.
