In this subject students will be introduced to the nature of the law of torts and to a number of discrete torts including trespass to the person, land and goods, nuisance, defamation and other miscellaneous intentional torts. The subject will allow students to continue to develop problem solving skills and other technical skills relevant to real world legal practice.

Learning Outcomes

• describe some of the concepts that underpin the law of torts including the values and assumptions inherent in the law of torts and the impact/implications of that law on the social life of Australians;
• explain the principles and rules relevant to particular areas of the law of torts in Australia, including trespass, nuisance, defamation and other miscellaneous intentional torts;
• identify possible tortious issues in legal problems, and through extraction of legal principles from primary and secondary sources explain how the law of torts would apply to resolve those issues;
• convey information accurately and effectively in both written and oral form appropriate to the chosen audience;
• demonstrate the ability to work effectively both independently and where required collaboratively to meet assessment requirements. Identify and action learning opportunities and self-improvements.
