This subject explores issues that impact on the provision of nursing and midwifery care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Students undertaking this subject will develop awareness of the historical, social and cultural issues that influence the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This increased awareness will enable students to acquire critical and reflective skills to provide nursing and midwifery care in a culturally safe manner.
Learning Outcomes
- identify and apply the principles and practices of cultural safety and reflective practice in the care of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples;
- evaluate the impact of colonisation and historical events on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' access and engagement with health services;
- identify and appraise strategies for 'closing the gap' in healthcare delivery to diverse Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families, and communities;
- compare current Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders' health indicators to that of other Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations;
- examine the influences that the social and cultural determinants of health have on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' health status and their social and emotional wellbeing.
