This subject teaches students to be analytical, and read, think and write critically. The students are introduced to the history of thought and are then provided with scenarios to encourage analytical and critical thought. This subject prepares students for academic performance in disciplined, self-directed thinking through training in the use of strategies, skills, and conventions expected of suitably proficient readers and writers at university. Students will acquire skills to equip them in the recognition and avoidance of common errors in reasoning and to state, explain and apply criteria for writing analytical and persuasive writing. In addition, students will also be developing and evaluating arguments and should also be able to explain and apply basic concepts / principles of inductive and deductive reasoning. Providing a fundamental skills-base that is applicable across disciplines, this subject will enable students to develop and expand their writing skills and to draw reasonable conclusions. With critical thinking and writing abilities, students can progress into their fields of study at university.
