This subject prepares students for academic performance in disciplined, self-directed thinking through training in the use of strategies, skills, and conventions expected of suitably proficient readers and writers. Students will acquire skills to equip them in the recognition and avoidance of common errors in reasoning and to state, explain and apply criteria for writing analytical and persuasive writing. In addition, students will also be developing and evaluating arguments and should also be able to explain plus apply basic concepts / principles of inductive and deductive reasoning. A fundamental skills base that is applicable across disciplines, this subject will enable students to develop and expand their writing skills and to draw reasonable conclusions. With critical thinking and writing abilities, students can progress into their fields of study.

Learning Outcomes

• exhibit understanding of fallacies and ability to appreciate ambiguity and slanted arguments;
• review and clarify understanding of the importance of not plagiarising and demonstrate the ability to do in-text citation and referencing;
• apply critical thinking skills;
• identify, evaluate, integrate and apply different types of information to form independent and informed judgment;
• produce ideas in a systematic and organised manner;
• demonstrate understanding of the appropriate register and writing conventions for essays;
• revise and edit written work for accuracy.
