This subject examines the regulation of creative cultures in Australia over the past 100 years. It pays particular attention to print-based publications but also considers film, television, radio and digital media. The subject examines censorship in relation to moral panics and social crises, and in terms of the development of new technologies of production and distribution. Topics include censorship categories, exhibition classifications, and the role of law in media.
Learning Outcomes
- develop appropriate and competent skills in research and writing;
- assess appropriate digital methods for cultural inquiry and apply them to research;
- examine the social and cultural contexts of production, dissemination, and reception of creative works;
- identify the relationship between moral panics, social and cultural crises, and the development of new technologies;
- identify and explain the relationship between creativity, ethics, and the law in Australia.
