Spectra and Fourier techniques. Spectral shaping. Linear (AM, SSB), Exponential (FM, PM), Pulse (PAM, PWM) and Digital modulation schemes (ASK, FSK, PSK, QAM, MSK) and applications. Signal coding (PCM, Delta Modulation, Sigma Delta Modulation, Vocoders). Baseband coding (NRZ, Manchester). Spread spectrum techniques (CDMA, COFDM). Digital television. Communication Standards for Radio, TV, Mobile Radio and Wireless LAN applications.
Learning Outcomes
- Apply a range of modulation and demodulation techniques used in analogue and digital communication systems;
- Determine frequency (spectral) components of time-domain waveforms;
- Design an FM modulator and demodulator to meet given requirements;
- Apply error correction techniques for detecting and correcting bit errors in digital data communications;
- Apply line-coding techniques for digital data communications along transmission lines.
