ED2093 has been designed to equip you with "the necessary knowledge and competencies to effectively and equitably teach mathematics to young children [from birth to 8 years] in new times." This means that the focus will now be on how you will teach young children in 21st century classrooms, the mathematical content and strategic skills described in the relevant curriculum materials that will guide your teaching. The following ED2093 outcomes will guide your learning and it is these outcomes that will be assessed through your assignments and the examination.
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate an awareness of the content and characteristics of developmentally appropriate and socially just mathematics curricula for young children;
- demonstrate an understanding of the learning processes used by young children of different sociocultural backgrounds in learning mathematics;
- explore ways of creating a learning environment for effective learning and teaching of mathematics for young children;
- construct, articulate and apply a personal philosophy regarding the teaching and learning of mathematics in new times;
- evaluate various teaching methods, materials and media as they relate to young children's learning as stipulated in relevant state and national frameworks and policies;
- demonstrate the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at a Developed Level and, for B.Ed (ECE) students, relevant ACECQA standards.
Assumed Knowledge: | It is expected that from ED1491 students will be familiar with the mathematical concepts explored each week, and that they have sufficient experience in critical analysis of readings and ideas that they can construct a well-supported argument |
