Analytical Chemistry is the branch of chemistry that provides qualitative information (what is in a sample) and quantitative information (how much is in a sample) about matter. A good knowledge of analytical chemistry is important in any discipline where the characterisation of materials is important. The topics will include core skills in analytical chemistry such as data analysis, classical volumetric, gravimetric and titrimetric techniques, instrumental analysis in analytical chemistry such as chromatography (GC and HPLC) and spectrometry (UV-Vis, MS), as well as principles of Quality Assurance and Quality Control and appropriate documentation of analytical procedures. All techniques and methods will be discussed in the context of a range of real, industrial, environmental, biological and medical contexts.
Learning Outcomes
- understand the basic knowledge of analytical chemistry;
- describe the principles and applications of spectroscopic techniques;
- distinguish the need and uses of separation techniques such as gas and liquid chromatography;
- understand a range of analytical techniques with knowledge of the limitations and complementarity of the techniques;
- demonstrate knowledge of modern Quality Assurance and Quality Control procedures.
