Year: | 2018 |
Student Contribution Band: | Band 2 |
Administered by: | College of Science and Engineering |
General Chemistry: Electronic structure of atoms, molecules and solids. Bonding theories. Hydrogen bonding in natural systems. Organic and Inorganic Chemistry. IUPAC nomenclature. Organic isomers. Structure and function: proteins and soaps. Carbohydrates. Physical Chemistry. Stoichiometry, gas laws, chemical kinetics, catalysis (enzymatic applications), thermochemistry, equilibrium, acid-base chemistry, electrochemistry (corrosion, batteries). Colligative properties (osmosis). Environmental Chemistry. Water chemistry / carbonate equilibria, stable isotopes, radiochemistry, carbon cycle.
Learning Outcomes
- learned the fundaments of first year chemistry with an emphasis given to areas applicable to biological, earth and environmental sciences. The chemical topics that will have been covered and understood at this level include stoichiometry, structure and bonding, organic and inorganic naming, physical chemistry (gases, thermochemistry, equilibrium, electrochemistry, acid/base chemistry) and environmental chemistry;
- developed practical experience in simple chemical laboratory techniques that will be applicable to subsequent studies;
- become familiar with chemical principles such as redox chemistry, periodicity, electronic structure, isotopes and pH;
- have been introduced to a number of characteristic reactions in atmospheric and organic chemistry.
