This subject explores the theme of governance and in particular, governance through adjudicative law and legislative law. Sources of law, the court hierarchies, the doctrine of precedent and statutory interpretation are areas of focus within these concepts. The subject develops legal, ethical and technological literacy and provides a range of skills and knowledge required for legal research, writing and problem solving.

Learning Outcomes

• demonstrate an ability to conduct the library research and locate legislation, cases and commentary in both print and electronic form;
• explain and evaluate sources of law and legal process;
• explain, apply and analyse the principles of the doctrine of precedent in a range of practical situations;
• explain, apply and analyse the principles of statutory interpretation in a range of practical situations;
• communicate findings in a clear and logical manner in accordance with the Australian Guide to Legal Citation.
