This subject introduces the discipline of pharmacology and applies the principles of this discipline to management of pain and inflammation. It then introduces the immune system and the inflammatory reaction and how these relate to tissue invasion and injury. Finally, it introduces healthcare related microbiology and some of the major the pathogens which invade the body to cause disease and illness
Learning Outcomes
- define the major groups of microorganisms and list their defining features;
- compare modes of transmission of microorganisms and identify treatment and prevention strategies;
- explain introductory principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics and illustrate these concepts with exemplar drugs;
- describe the components of the immune system and explain their roles in resistence to disease.
