Available to any students with an interest in physiology, excluding Nursing Science and Pharmacy students.
This subject provides the student with the foundation knowledge for further studies in human physiology and pharmacology. It covers a diversity of functions of the human body including cell and tissue organisation; tissue excitation; blood and lymph and the physiology of the nervous, musculoskeletal and renal systems. Students will be introduced to scientific writing, including literature searching, data analysis, and the application of basic statistics. This knowledge is essential for careers in health related areas, human biomedical research and drug research development.
Learning Outcomes
- describe the physiology underlying the cellular, nervous, muscular and cardiovascular systems;
- associate how the above systems work together in normal human functioning;
- compare the socio-ecological impact, pathophysiology and treatment underlying a disease process between the first and third worlds;
- relate both verbally and in writing how the methods of biomedical science further understanding of physiological processes;
- demonstrate personal and social responsibility and accountability through an awareness of ethical frameworks, by working safely and responsibly in individual and team environments in the laboratory setting.
