This subject develops in-depth knowledge specific to the aetiology and pathophysiology of diabetes and clinical management including prevention, risk factor screening, diagnosis and the range of management strategies. Students will develop critical understanding of acute and chronic complications of diabetes.
Learning Outcomes
- compare and contrast the aetiology, pathophysiology, clinical signs and symptoms and associated management of the different types of diabetes;
- describe risk factors, diagnostic screening procedures, and the impact of diet and physical activity on glycaemic control, based on contemporary research evidence and best practice guidelines;
- critically appraise the principles of diabetes assessment and management against evidence based guidelines and analyse the associations between diabetes control and complications;
- integrate and apply knowledge and understanding of pharmacological management of diabetes, drug side effects and contraindications in clinical management and patient education, across a range of patient situations.
