This subject is focused on the challenges associated with working in a nurse leadership role in a broad variety of clinical contexts. Leadership and management theories and principles will give students an overview of what it takes to be a successful clinical nurse leader at every level of healthcare delivery from the bedside to boardroom. The issues related to leadership and management of health service delivery such as change management, resource management, safety and quality and service coordination are explored. In addition collaboration via information technology will be discussed with reflection on appropriate multidisciplinary management approaches.
Learning Outcomes
- review and analyse the contextual factors and health issues that impact clinical leadership and management;
- explain evidence-based models of leadership, including underlying theories used by nurse leaders and managers in Australian healthcare organisations;
- describe the role of the registered nurse in the management of high quality nursing care undertaken within a clinical governance framework;
- identify uses of information and communication technologies in the management of clinical outcomes and quality improvements, and risk and resource management;
- communicate knowledge and information clearly and coherently to a range of audiences;
- critically reflect on clinical assessment knowledge and skills and their importance within clinical leadership and management.
