This unit is designed to provide students with a sound working knowledge of theories and philosophies in the creative arts. The unit is geared towards building an understanding of the contemporary arts with a review of earlier developments such as Modernism and Postmodernism. Students examine the nature of aesthetic experience and identify why the arts are of value to us. The aim of the weekly tutorial session is to engage in a discussion about works of art and design in terms of their form, content, context and ideology.
Learning Outcomes
- students will be able to describe the history and theories underpinning creative arts practice since the advent of Modernism;
- students will be able to describe, analyse and compare creative works in terms of their form, content and social and historial context;
- students will have the ability to structure concise, descriptive and analytical writing about creative works and the meaning and value of the arts.
