The unit is designed to provide students with a sound working knowledge of the history and theory of arts practice. This subject will examine key theories that provide explanations for why the arts are of value to us. This is an important foundation subject, as it will assist students to see how artists in the past have used symbolic means, sound and movement to communicate with an audience. In this subject students will also examine the way in which people working in the arts exercise creative imagination to make culturally significant or insightful works which contribute to our understanding of our life. An important aspect of this subject is the skill of academic writing. Participation in all tutorials will ensure that students learn the writing skills needed to complete the assessment tasks. Research skills including the correct use of referencing will be taught, practiced and assessed in the unit. Writing about art is of value as this process enables us to reflect upon and clarify what we know. Writing enables us to understand the aims of arts practice at a deeper level and it helps to imagine more persuasive work.
Learning Outcomes
- Identify illustrate and/or describe significant movements and theories underpinning the history creative arts practice;
- Describe, analyse and compare significant movements and creative works in terms of their form, content, and social and historical context;
- Communicate with others during group discussions and through structured concise, descriptive and analytical writing about art history, art movements, creative works and the meaning and value of the arts;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the self- transformative nature of arts practice.
