Available to Bachelor of Health Science (Physician Assistant) students only.
This subject available to Level 2 students enrolled in the Bachelor of Heath Science (Physician Assistant) Studies. It will cover paediatric medicine, emergency medicine, adult medicine and preparation for clinical placement. It will also cover, procedural skills used in physician assistant practice and performance and interpretation of basic clinical investigations. The topics will be presented in an integrated fashion across the semester of study. Students will undertake clinical placement in an inpatient setting.
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate sound knowledge of emergency medicine principles and approach to trauma patient;
- demonstrate sound knowledge of paediatric medicine including normal development, immunisation, and basic pathophysiology in paediatric medicine;
- demonstrate sound knowledge of reproductive, haematologic and endocrine systems and basic pathophysiology associated with these systems;
- practically apply knowledge and basic procedural skills for breast, pelvic, male genitourinary examinations. Demonstrate ability to perform, pap smear, wet mount, dipstick urinalysis, urine pregnancy testing, urinary catheterisation;
- demonstrate basic interpretation of emergency department laboratory and radiologic investigations, including ECG interpretation and basic interpretation of plain film X-Rays.

Special Assessment Requirements: | Attendance at residential schools and clinical placements is mandatory. Satisfactory completion of the clinical aspects, including set competencies, is required. |
