Broad overview of management with examples set in a contemporary Medical Laboratory Framework. This subject builds on issues introduced in Introduction to Biomedicine (BM1001). Further developing the students understanding of Quality assurance/quality management issues as they relate to: Preanalytical, Analytical and post analytical issues; Human resource and cost management; Professional utilisation and development of workforce; Operational issues: Range of testing equipment available: modes of operation maintenance and servicing. Interfaces to laboratory information systems; Medico legal considerations. The student should leave with a clear understanding of the ISO 15189 guidelines underpinning NATA accreditation of Pathology Laboratories.
Learning Outcomes
- be able to describe the basic concepts and terminology of management;
- be able to apply management theory to a wide range of real life scenarios;
- understand contemporary management issues and identify quality management practices relevant for medical laboratories;
- demonstrate a working knowledge of issues of pre, post and analytical quality assurance;
- be able to apply the concepts of quality assurance and quality control within the medical laboratory;
- critically reflect upon the role of pathology investigation and medical research in tropical, rural and remote and indigenous communities;
- understand and apply the requirements for NATA and ISO to simulated projects on medical laboratory accreditation.
