James Cook University Subject Handbook - 2017

LB5235 - Practical or Research Project

Credit points: 03
Year: 2017
Student Contribution Band: Band 3
Administered by: College of Business, Law & Governance

This subject combines theoretical material covered in the MBA program and applies it directly in the workplace. A focus on work integrated learning is used as a platform from which to produce a substantive piece of applied research-based work. The aim is to integrate work experience flexibly into a research report/dissertation. One option is for students who are already employed to develop an independent research project. They are required to negotiate with their employer and prepare a workplace relevant project proposal and research report/dissertation. Students who have no current employer are responsible for identifying and making initial contact with an industrial partner. Alternatively, students may opt to fully integrate work and learning through a professional internship in a relevant, approved industry workplace using the same pathway as above (Brisbane only). If acceptable and depending on the nature of the WIL experience, you (and the subject coordinator) may also be required to sign an Independent Study Agreement (ISA) with deadlines for the various stages of the project. Assessment items include the production of an applied research proposal and final report. These options need to be approved by the subject coordinator/lecturer. Students who are admitted to the MBA-MIT are required to undertake an Information Technology related project.
