James Cook University Subject Handbook - 2017

ED5875 - Foundations of Education

Credit points: 03
Year: 2017
Student Contribution Band: Band 1
Administered by: College of Arts, Society & Education

This subject provides a general introduction to the historical and philosophical foundations of education. The subject introduces key theories, concepts and frameworks that inform curricula (ie what is taught) and pedagogy (ie how it is taught) for learners (ie who is taught). Specifically, these foundations of education will be explored in light of current sociocultural and psychological literature on learner diversity and development in the early, middle and secondary phases of schooling. The subject encourages pre-service teachers to develop their own teacher identity in relation to (1) global themes in education and (2) JCU's distinctive focus on literacy, numeracy, sustainability and Indigenous education. The subject is offered in block mode over a three-week period. Face-to-face commitment from 9am - 5pm is required for the first week of subject. Time is given for completion of the major assignment during the second week and a final examination is scheduled for the third week. Successful completion of the subject requires attendance at the earlier three-day induction program.
