This subject addresses principles and practices related to teaching and learning in the humanities and social sciences in primary settings with reference to relevant state and national curriculum frameworks. The subject develops pre-service teachers' competence in planning, implementing and assessing social inquiries which position learners as active and informed citizens. The subject builds a repertoire of strategies that promote higher-order thinking capabilities to enable learners to critically engage with evidence, and arrive at well-reasoned conclusions and sustainable courses of action. Particular attention will be given to developments in the Australian curriculum, including the cross-curriculum priorities of Indigenous perspectives, Asian perspectives and sustainability.
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate the importance of the humanities and social sciences as a learning area in promoting students as active and informed citizens;
- apply understandings of curriculum, inquiry learning in the humanities and social sciences and assessment frameworks in order to plan intellectually challenging and worthwhile inquiries;
- apply theoretical orientations, sources of knowledge, and pedagogical and curriculum principles to learning in the humanities and social sciences;
- employ strategies which explicitly and purposefully promote students' literacy, numeracy and critical thinking capabilities within inquiry learning contexts;
- demonstrate Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at a developed level.
