This subject addresses principles and practices related to teaching and learning in the humanities and social sciences in early childhood settings for children from birth to 8 years with reference to relevant state and national curriculum frameworks. The subject develops pre-service teachers' competence in planning, implementing and assessing social inquiries which position young learners as active and informed citizens. The subject builds a repertoire of strategies that support the development of strong personal identities connected to families, communities and the wider world. Particular attention will be given to developments in the Early Years Learning Framework and the Australian curriculum, including the cross-curriculum priorities of Indigenous perspectives, Asian perspectives and sustainability.

Learning Outcomes

• employ strategies which explicitly and purposefully promote students' literacy, numeracy and critical thinking capabilities within inquiry learning contexts;
• demonstrate understanding of the Early Years Learning Framework and Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at a developed level;
• apply understandings of curriculum, play based and inquiry learning in the humanities and social sciences and assessment frameworks in order to plan intellectually challenging and worthwhile inquiries;
• apply theoretical orientations, sources of knowledge, and pedagogical and curriculum principles to learning in the humanities and social sciences in early childhood;
• demonstrate the importance of teacher understanding of the humanities and social sciences as a learning area in promoting young learners as active and informed citizens with strong identities in changing communities and world.

Assumed Knowledge:	This subject has been designed on the assumption that students: can effectively navigate through LearnJCU; are competent at planning at the level of lesson plans; have well developed research skills that will enable them to research topics within humanities and social science education
