Core subject for all Bachelor of Education (Secondary) students.
Through the study of this subject you will be examining a range of special needs that you might encounter in students who attend your classes. You will be given guidance to help to make accommodations and modification to the curriculum and the learning environment in order to meet the learning requirements of students with special needs. In addition, you will be introduced to national and international policies guiding the inclusion of students with special needs into mainstream classrooms.
Learning Outcomes
- critically analyse issues related to the education of students with special needs: inclusion, integration, legislation, policies, appropriate education (both age and level appropriate), quality of life;
- critically analyse issues related to the education of students with special needs: inclusion, integration, legislation, policies, appropriate education (both age and level appropriate), quality of life;
- have a working knowledge of support processes for students with specific learning needs including the Educational Adjustment Program (EAP), Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Individual Student Plans (ISP) and Negotiated Education Plans (NEPs);
- recognise the indicators of a range of different special educational needs, be able to identify appropriate educational assessment, understand the impact on learning and design appropriate educational strategies;
- demonstrate Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at an assured level.
