The subject has been designed to equip preservice teachers with the necessary knowledge and competencies to effectively and equitably teach mathematics to primary aged children from diverse backgrounds. The subject examines current national and state curriculum frameworks and policies in mathematics education. In this second year subject preservice teachers are expected to develop mathematical and pedagogical content knowledge, and contemporary approaches to teaching primary aged children in 21st century primary classrooms.
Learning Outcomes
- construct, articulate and apply a personal philosophy regarding the teaching and learning of mathematics in new times;
- demonstrate an understanding of the learning processes used by primary children of different sociocultural backgrounds in learning mathematics;
- explore ways of creating a learning environment for effective learning and teaching of mathematics for primary children;
- demonstrate an awareness of the content and characteristics of developmentally appropriate and socially just mathematics curricula for primary children;
- evaluate various teaching methods, materials and media as they relate to primary children's learning as stipulated in relevant state and national frameworks and policies, and demonstrate Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at a developed level.
Assumed Knowledge: | It is expected that from ED1491 students will be familiar with the mathematical concepts explored each week, and that they have sufficient experience in critical analysis of readings and ideas that they can construct a well-supported argument |
Prerequisites: | 6 credit points of level 1 ED subjects including ED1491 |
