Limited offering available only to RATEP students.
This subject reviews mathematics from the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline (QKLG) and up to Year 9 level in the Australian Curriculum from a teacher's perspective and introduces students to the numeracy demands of professional life and to those of the learning areas that comprise the Australian Curriculum, the EYLF and the QKLG. The links between mathematics and numeracy are explored through the mathematical ideas, ways of thinking and ways of representing quantities that permeate most fields of human endeavour. These include: quantity, space and shape, change and relationships, and uncertainty; proportional reasoning, algebraic thinking and problem solving; graphical and numerical representations. Mathematical literacies studied in the subject include spatial literacy, statistical literacy and financial literacy.
Learning Outcomes
- to demonstrate a strong conceptual and procedural knowledge of the mathematics currently experienced in early childhood settings and taught in primary and middle schools;
- to construct an understanding of numeracy as involving the ability to use a combination of: underpinning mathematical concepts and skills from across the discipline in different contexts;
- to evaluate teaching episodes and learning resources in terms of their mathematical and/or numeracy content value;
- to describe common misconceptions in areas of mathematics and numeracy;
- to demonstrate Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at an Introduced level and, for B.Ed (ECE) students, relevant ACECQA standards.
