This subject is a follow-up of EA2300: Introductory Metamorphic and Structural Geology. In the metamorphic section, emphasis will be placed on the techniques used to reconstruct the tetono-metamorphic and fluid evolution of a metamorphic terrain. The structural geology section is aimed to enhance the learner's capabilities to provide high-standard descriptions and interpretations of geometric, kinematic and structural data of deformed rocks and regions.
Learning Outcomes
- understand the thermodynamics of metamorphic reactions;
- understand the fundamental concepts of rock deformation such as rheology, stress and strain;
- be able to describe, characterise and analyse a large variety of structural and metamorphic geological data;
- to write a geological report;
- have an understanding of how to study a metamorphic terrain using (a) mineral relationships in thin sections, (b) mineral chemistry, and (c) whole-rock chemical data.
