This subject introduces the discipline of pharmacology and applies the principles of this discipline to management of pain and inflammation. It then introduces the immune system and the inflammatory reaction and how these relate to tissue invasion and injury. Finally, it introduces healthcare related microbiology and some of the major the pathogens which invade the body to cause disease and illness
Learning Outcomes
- apply basic principles and concepts of pharmacology to pharmaceuticals used in the management of pain and inflammation;
- explain the mechanisms by which tissue damage occurs with reference to tissue injury in disease;
- explain the roles of inflammation and the immune system in specific and non-specific responses of the body in its resistance to disease;
- describe the epidemiology, pathology, treatment, and methods limiting the spread of the main groups of microorganisms and parasites affecting humans;
- investigate how a microorganism invades the body, establishes an infection and how that infection can be either prevented or treated;
- complete basic pharmacological calculations relevant to clinical practice.
